Antonio Chella was born in Florence, Italy, on March 4, 1961. He received the Laurea degree in electronic engineering and the Ph.D. degree in computer engineering from the University of Palermo, Italy, in 1988 and 1993, respectively. Currently, he is a Professor of Robotics at the University of Palermo. He is Editor-in-Chief of the “International Journal of Machine Consciousness” published by World Scientific Press started in Jun 2009. He is an Associate Editor of Artificial Intelligence Journal since 2009. He is a Founding Member of the BICA Society (Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures). In 2007 organized and co-chaired the AAAI Fall Symposium on AI and Consciousness. In 2005 he organized and co-chaired the International Workshop in Artificial Consciousness (IWAC 2005) in Agrigento, Italy. He served as a member of the board of the AI*IA (Italian Association of Artificial Intelligence) from 1996 to 2001 and as scientific secretary of AI*IA from 1998 to 2000. Currently he is the coordinator of the working group of robotics of the AI*IA. He has been the coordinator of the course of studies of “Computer Engineering” of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Palermo from 2001 to 2007. He has been the head of the Department of Computer Engineering of the University of Palermo from 2007 to 2010. He is the Founder and Head of the Robotics Lab. Antonio Chella taught “Fundamentals of Computer Science” from 1995 to 2000. Currently he teaches “Robotics” since 1998 (second grade course: about 40 students per year) and “Machine Consciousness” since 2007 (PhD course: about 18 students per year).
